The 2007 Lenses on Learning Supervision Institute
Important Information
About the Institute
The 2007 Lenses on Learning Supervision Institute is a residential institute that will prepare two-person teams who will facilitate the course, Lenses on Learning Supervision: Focusing on Mathematical Thinking.
In the Summer of 2007, from July 22 - August 4th, EDC will offer residential facilitator training in the Boston area for those interested in teaching Lenses on Learning Supervision: Focusing on Mathematical Thinking.
In addition to introducing facilitators to the course materials, the two-week institute is designed to:
- Expand facilitators’ perspectives on instruction for adults
- Provide in-depth explorations of mathematics
- Analyze how principals think about the ideas in the Lenses course with a view to thinking about how to work with principals' ideas about mathematics learning and teaching
- Practice-teach excerpts from the curriculum
The pedagogical orientation of the institute is aligned with that of the Lenses on Learning course itself as well as with the pedagogy of high quality mathematics classrooms.
The Supervision Institute will provide:
- Instruction from the Lenses on Learning Supervision authors and experienced Lenses on Learning facilitators
- Lodging from Sunday night July 22– Saturday morning August 4th. Institute participants will share double occupancy rooms. Room assignments will be made based on gender with an effort to keep facilitation teams together. If you prefer to have your own room, single accommodations are available for an additional fee.
- Food— Breakfast, lunch and breaks will be provided each day (except Saturday July 28, Sunday July 29 and August 4th). Participants will be responsible for their dinners.
Participants are expecteed to purchase Lenses on Learning materials prior to coming to the Institute. Institute material ordering information can be found here.
The Lenses on Learning Course Materials
Lenses on Learning Module 1: Instructional Leadership in Mathematics is a four-session module (3 hours/session) that provides a broad overview of the fundamental ideas about mathematics, learning, and teaching on which Standards-based mathematics education is based. It gives administrators the opportunity to sort out their initial thoughts and reactions to these ideas and to begin to consider their implications for their own work.
Lenses on Learning - Supervision: Focusing on Mathematical Thinking is an eight-session (3 hours/session) course designed to help elementary and middle school principals develop the skills necessary to support mathematics teaching and learning through observation and supervision. The course has two central areas of focus:
- Developing an Eye for Mathematics Classrooms Principals develop the capacity to discern the features of a classroom that are salient for student learning of mathematics, with a particular focus on the mathematics content of the lesson, the teacher’s work with students’ thinking about mathematical ideas, and the nature of the intellectual community in the classroom.
- Rethinking the nature of interactions with teachers Principals consider what might be most productively discussed in conferences with teachers, and how discussions with teachers in pre- and post-observation conferences might be shaped to support teachers’ continued learning and the development of an orientation of curiosity about children’s mathematical thinking.
In the Lenses course sessions, principals explore concepts in elementary and middle school mathematics in order to deepen their understanding of high quality mathematics instruction. Using a specially-designed classroom observation guide, they view and discuss videotapes of teachers and students at work, read and discuss relevant articles, and carry out guided assignments in their schools related to the ideas explored in the course.
