CDT's Developing Mathematical Ideas Network is designed to help school systems in low-income communities develop capacity for in-depth professional development for K-6 teachers of mathematics. The project provides professional development for teacher educators, and, through an apprenticeship program, helps selected teachers take on the role of teacher educator in their districts. The project's major tool is a professional development curriculum, called Developing Mathematical Ideas (DMI), designed to help teachers think through major ideas of elementary mathematics and examine how children develop those ideas.

Teacher educators and, later, their apprentices, facilitate DMI seminars at each of the project sites in Bloomington, New Mexico; Boston, Massachusetts; Cambridge, Massachusetts; Chicago, Illinois; and San Francisco, California. To prepare for this work, they attend summer institutes designed to explore facets of the curriculum and issues of facilitation. As they offer the DMI seminars, they participate in an electronic network designed to support their work. Seminars consist of 16 3-hour sessions offered over the course of a year, and are offered each of three years in each site.

This DMI Network project is part of the teacher leadership development strand of work that is taking place within CDT.
