Tentative Plans for the I-Search
Two weeks before an interdisciplinary team was about to implement their
unit on "How the Atlantic Ocean Affects New England's Economy: Past,
Present, and Future," they met to reflect and revise their plans. These
are their notes.

Tentative Plans for the I-Search
Pre-Immersion
Activity to illustrate basic economic concepts using candy
General overview of the project and the four phases of the I-Search Unit
Parent notice of volunteer time
Discussion of upcoming immersion activites
Friday 1/27
- Give out map of New England and homework assignment to bring in an
item from the coastal town the student has visited.
Monday 1/30
- Do the coastline mapping activity where students map identify coastline
places they've been and bring in a show and tell of this place and what
they've done there.
- Discuss jobs, industries, and businesses?
- Present web of theme and overarching concepts, brainstorm each thread
and post it in the room.
- Go over background of Georges Banks (Mini Lesson). Use a map if possible.
- Give brief orientation to movie (Captains Courageous)
and what is a CLASSIC? How does it get to be a classic film and novel?
- Start watching movie. Give a brief amount of time at end of period
to start the scavenger hunt.
- Use Search Organizer to input what they learned that
is new.

Tuesday 1/31
- Finish watching Captains Courageous.
- Fill in the scavenger hunt.
- Connect the web to the movie.
- Fill out the Search Organizer on a hard copy.
- Develop questions related to the web.
Wednesday 2/1
- Read articles (possibly Down The Drain article).
- Pose questions.
- Class 6-3 input into the Search Organizer and debrief.
Thursday 2/2
- Speaker day
- They've seen fishermen in the past, can they make a prediction about
how they are the same today. Background knowledge about Georges Bank
and the oil drilling.
Friday 2/3
- Context setting for the video; specific cooperative groups zeroing
in on the items given to them by the teacher.
