Reflections
The teachers on one team developed two different formats to guide reflection
and self-evaluation as presented below. They handed these out after the
reports and exhibitions were completed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS FOR THE I-SEARCH UNIT
HOW THE ATLANTIC OCEAN AFFECTS NEW ENGLAND'S ECONOMY:
PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE
We have all been part of an intensive research curriculum. You have had
to work in a variety of ways to learn about the general topics to develop
your own research question, to conduct research, collaborate with others,
and to write a report. Now we would like you to think about your experiences
and how they have affected you. Spend some time reviewing your notes before
you begin writing a reflection/self-evaluation.
REFLECTION/SELF-EVALUATION
Story of your search
Describe the story [process, steps you took] of your search:
- Tell about what excited you and what you wanted to learn about.
- Include a description of what you did during the 4 phases.
- Describe your successes and frustrationswhat sources were the
most helpful to you and why.
'What This Means to Me'
Tell us what this unit meant to you:
- Describe your favorite activities, books, speakers, and how they affected
you.
- Write about what you would like to learn more about.
Self-Evaluation
Write an evaluation of yourself as a researcher and a learner.
[Use the story of your search to cite examples.]
- Comment on what things you did well and the things that were difficult.
- Identify ways in which you helped or were helped by classmates and
teachers.
- Talk about what you would change or do differently if you were doing
another I-Search unit.
