Global Learning Group Mission and Themes

The mission of EDC's Global Learning Group is to build international communities of practice that solve world problems. We believe we are living on the cusp of a global community of nations, where no one country can afford to overlook the experience of others, and where bi-lateral or international collaboration is increasingly useful, necessary and wise. Consequently, GLG brings together teams of people and institutions from different parts of the world to develop solutions to the education and human development challenges of our planet. We currently carry out our work in five domains:

  • Basic Education: Increasing basic education access and quality in formal and non-formal settings

  • Workforce Development: Helping people gain the knowledge and skills they need to lead productive lives and contribute to economic growth

  • Youth Development: Harnessing the resources of youth in contribute to work, civil society, and family life

  • Information Technology: Utilizing the resources of information and communications technologies to strengthen the effectiveness of development policies and programs

  • Global Citizenship: Developing tools and programs that enable people from different countries to work together on common issues

Basic Education:

Children from CSA Project in GhanaGLG works to help countries strengthen basic education access and quality and achieve Education for All. Our contributions to the field of basic education are in the areas of policy research and strategic planning, literacy programs for in-school and out-of-school populations, curriculum and materials development, and community participation in education. We have developed a unique flexible learning systems model that provides alternative pathways (formal and non-formal) for young people to gain basic education skills and also access to livelihood and employment opportunities. In recent years we have helped Ministries of Education develop new basic education policies in Ghana, Mali, and Malawi, developed innovative literacy programs for out-of-school youth and adults in Haiti and Afghanistan, developed in-school mother-tongue and English-language literacy programs in Ghana and Guyana, and developed tools and methodologies that are being used in several countries to support greater parent and community involvement in local school reform. Workforce Development:

Youth from IDEJEN Project in HaitiThe Global Learning Group believes that preparing people for jobs and livelihood is a primary responsibility of the education sector. GLG helps education and training institutions design and implement programs that prepare people for the workforce; including the placement of learners into jobs or career tracks that lead to jobs. Examples of our recent workforce activities include: a project in Haiti that provides education, training, andemployment opportunities for out-of-school youth; efforts to strengthen workforce education programs in tourism and IT in Armenia and Turkish Cyprus; and an eight country assessment of youth and workforce issues in the Asia Near East region. Youth Development:

Young Girl from LCEP Project in AfghanistanYoung people, aged 15-24 represent a third of the population in the developing world, and yet youth are an often overlooked population in terms of development programming. The Global Learning Group works with countries around the world to prepare and engage out-of-school children and youth for their roles within the world of work, civil society, and family life. We believe that young people can make positive contributions to society, given the opportunity and trust to do so. Examples of GLG’s current youth development activities include: an effort to strengthen the ability of youth to participate in village governance and economic empowerment activities in Afghanistan; engaging young people in the provision of humanitarian assistance in West Bank/Gaza; helping South Africa develop a youth community service program; strengthening the technical and vocational skills of out-of-school boys in Jamaica and linking them to employment opportunities; and utilizing sports and recreational activities as a way to help out-of-school youth in Uganda learn conflict resolution skills. Information Technology:

Participants using IT in E-Biz Project in MacedoniaThe Global Learning Group’s Center for Innovative and Management Technologies has been at the forefront of the application of information and communication technologies to support development goals. Center staff integrate development knowledge and experience with information/communications/technology (ICT) technical expertise to create solutions that are user-driven not technology-driven. We work in the fields of information technology strategy, distance training and education, e-commerce, e-governance, and expanding ICT access. Examples of our work include developing E—Biz Centers in Macedonia that will support effective use of ICT to create employment and entrepreneurial opportunities in small and medium-sized businesses; helping decision-makers in the African Development Bank ensure that their organization’s ICT resources support organizational success; helping the Department of Health in the Philippines create a Multimedia Center of Excellence used for training health professionals; and assisting the National Family Planning Agency in Indonesia use ICT to improve governance processes, enhance efficiency, and build responsiveness to citizens. Global Citizenship:

Women in Mindanao PhilippinesThe growing inter-connectedness and interdependence of people in countries across the world implies a new perspective on the concept of citizenship and community. Of course, we all still carry with us ourresponsibilities to the communitiesand countries in which we live and work; but, in addition, people also have responsibilities to care about and, where appropriate, take action with regard to issues in other parts of the world. Therefore GLG undertakes activities that increase awareness and knowledge about peoples’ roles as global citizens. Examples of recent GLG activities in the domain of global citizenship include: the development of a Global Learning Charter School in New Bedford, Massachusetts; the design of a global curriculum on issues of humanitarian law, done in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross, and a new initiative in global governance and accountability.
