Challenge: Tens of
thousands of Americans are victims of hate crimes each year,
solely because of their race, ethnicity, religion, gender,
or sexual orientation. Hate crimes have a devastating impact,
not only on the victims but on their communities. Swift
and effective investigation, prosecution, and response to
the victims of these crimes are critical for sending the message
that hate-motivated violence will not be tolerated by our
communities.
Strategy: HHD trains
law enforcement officers to recognize and respond to hate
crimes and provide appropriate assistance to victims and their
communities. We also encourage multidisciplinary collaboration,
allowing professionals to recognize communities at risk and
intervene before prejudice leads to violence.
Result: Through its
national hate crime curricula and regional trainings, HHD
has helped increase the capacity of law enforcement officers
around the country to respond to hate crime and participate
in prevention efforts.
