About Us

Welcome to the Web site of EDC's Division of Mathematics Learning and Teaching (MLT).

MLT works in partnerships with the education community - students, teachers, teacher leaders, administrators, parents, and university faculty. We construct new educational tools, models, and solutions grounded in the daily realities of the classroom. MLT's work in mathematics education builds on these fundamental premises:

  • All students are naturally creative thinkers. They are full of interesting ideas and are capable, active learners, regardless of their age, knowledge, capabilities and backgrounds. Successful education taps the natural creativity students bring to the task of learning.
  • Talented and dedicated teachers are key. Teachers need opportunities for continual professional development, supported by communities of colleagues and accessible resources to implement new practice successfully in their classrooms.
  • Effective learning communities extend beyond school walls. The culture and structure of schools should support the development of learning communities among students, teachers, administrators, and parents.
