Word Prediction Collection

Word prediction is an adaptive software feature of some word processing and communications programs which reduce the number of keystrokes necessary to encode words, and which provides online spelling assistance. Word prediction can greatly benefit students with motor impairments, communication impairments, and or/learning disabilities.

These resources were compiled during NCIP's period of funding, 1992-1998.  If you have any questions abouta  resource, please use the contact information listed for the resource. Read and Write (previously textHELP 98)

A description of Read and Write!, a word prediction program specifically designed to support students with dyslexia, reading, typing, vision, and spelling difficulties. Read and Write is designed to be used in conjunction with any Windows word processor, spreadsheet or database.

WriteAway

A description ofWriteAway, a word prediction program, offering multiple, modifiable word lists for students to choose from. WriteAway may be used in conjunction with DOS.

Research

Increasing Literacy Levels by the Use of Linguistic Prediction

A summary of a study on the benefits of word prediction for students with a variety of special needs. Reports findings on a variety of qualitatively measured outcomes, including motivation, speed, vocabulary usage, and spelling accuracy.

The Intelligent Word Prediction Project

A description of a project which is developing a word prediction system to assist individuals with disabilities who use alternative and augmentative communication (AAC). Supported by a grant from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research and the Nemours Foundation, the purpose, method, and progress of the project is outlined.

Word Prediction and Spelling Correction Software with Mildly Handicapped Students

A summary of a study on the benefits of word prediction software (KeyWiz by Words+) on six students (ages 12 to 14) with learning disabilities. Reports outcomes on quantitative and qualitative measures.
