Background Materials and Resources
For those of you who want to get started a bit early (and we encourage you to do so!), most of the workshop materials will be up by October 30.
This week is intended to help participants get to know one another and build a sense of community. We'll talk about our backgrounds and our prior experiences with assistive technology. During this preparation week you will have an opportunity to learn more about the goals and process of the workshop, become familiar with the online environment, and learn about the SETT Framework which will guide our Virtual Team Meeting.
| Checklist for Week 1:
Become familiar with the workshop process by reading the Guide and trying the toolbar.
Go to the Tips & Talk Conference and fill out a Members form. Practice posting a message or two to the Tips & Talk Conference.
Link your introductory message to your name. (With this feature, whenever you post a message, readers will be able to click on your name to read your intro.) Instructions on how to do this will be posted in Tips & Talk. If you wish, feel free to contact Denise when you have posted your introduction, and she will link it for you.
Read the Background Materials.
Post a description of an experience you have had selecting assistive technology to the Selecting AT Conference.
Read the case study and prepare to add data to the Framework. (Hard copies of the case study and the Framework will be mailed to participants.) Tip: Make notes on the hardcopy version of the Framework chart before posting your messages.
Post any questions or reflections on the readings to the Tips & Talk Conference.
Using the hypothetical case as the basis for our Virtual Team Meeting, we will first gather data on the Student, Environments and Tasks. Joy will lead off the discussion for each of these components of the Framework in their respective conference. Add your data to the Framework chart by posting to the discussion and replying to other participants' postings.
Joy and the NCIP staff will extract the key data from these postings and add them to the chart. The evolving chart can be viewed by following the Framework icon on the toolbar. The data on the chart will be linked back to the original message in the conference.
Be sure to check for Joy's explanations and "status" messages. Joy will post these at the beginning and end of each week during the Virtual Team Meeting in the Team Meeting Directions and Reflections conference.
During Week 3, we will review the overall Framework and begin a discussion of the assistive technology tools that we might recommend for the student in our case. Joy will lead us in a discussion, first of features of potential high, low, and no tech tools, and then of specific products and the training and support that must be an integral part of the introduction and implementation of the technology. You can make recommendations and react to other's recommendations, and discuss issues of training, support, instructional, and technical strategies and implications of these suggestions in the Tools conference.
|Checklist for Weeks 2 and 3:
Post any clarifying questions you may have about the case study to the Team Meeting Directions and Reflections conference.
Check for Joy's "status" messages before posting to the S-E-T-T Conferences.
Add data to each of the four components of the Framework by posting messages to each of the conference areas:
During the last several days of the workshop, we will reflect on the selection process, on the use of the SETT Framework, and on the experience of this online workshop. We will also discuss ways to expand upon and continue this "virtual meeting" format.
|Checklist for Week 4:
Contribute your reflections on the workshop to the Wrapping Up discussion.
Fill out the evaluation form on the workshop and send to NCIP.
