PainLink Presents
March, 1999
One of our institutions, Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, VA
developed a mission statement to describe their commitment to alleviating pain.
According to Tammy Shearrow, RN, BSN, PainLink Coordinator, the statement was
developed because the members of the hospital's Pain Committee believe that pain
is a physical and emotional experience which requires an interdisciplinary
approach if pain is to be treated effectively. To relieve pain, a team approach
which includes patients and their families as well as healthcare professionals
is required. To make sure both patients and professionals understand that Mary
Washington Hospital is serious about relieving pain, Ms. Shearrow and her
colleagues on the Pain Management Committee are working with the hospital's
Public Relations & Marketing Department to release the mission statement
throughout the organization.
