WISE Tutor
(Work-centric Intelligent System for Education):
Manufacturing a New Learning Environment

This project is funded by US Dept. of Education, FIPSE grant P116B70787

PROJECT SUMMARY

Worker flexibility is the key to advanced manufacturing production. Workers need to be dynamically deployed in response to changing production requirements.  The only constant in this environment is constant training and retraining.  The challenge is for American technical and community colleges to create a new, competency-based model of education that can develop a flexible, highly skilled workforce capable of keeping up with technological advances.

WISE Tutor is a web-based, multimedia computer training program based on state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. The WISE Tutor software models the Chip Insertion Machine, a piece of equipment that produces complex circuit boards and is widely used in the electronic manufacturing industry.  However, this technology can be used to deliver any content material.

PROJECT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

WISE Tutor Software Version 0.3 is completed and is available.

The software was demonstrated to a small group of manufacturing trainers and technicians.  The questionnaire responses indicated that 33% of students thought that WISE Tutor was excellent as a learning tool, another 33% thought that it was a very good learning tool, and 11% thought that it was a good learning tool.  One respondent thought it was only a fair learning tool.

The project is in its third phase which is the dissemination of the WISE Tutor to a broader audience.  Those interested in trying out the software and possibly using it as a class module, please contact Mason Mitchell-Daniels (617-618-2127, e-mail: mmitchell-daniels@edc.org).

AVAILABLE SOFTWARE:

WISE Tutor Software is currently available by request. Please contact Mason Mitchell-Daniels for more information. WISE Tutor is not available for download at this time.
