Thanks for the clarification. I wondered because I'd read about a girls'
math/science-focused public school in Illinois facing a law suit. As far as
I know, there are not very many single-sex public schools for girls in
math/science, so I wondered how secure we were to bank on the permission of
"single-sex education in appropriate situations".

In response to your question, the main concern here is that Title IX
already permits single-sex education in appropriate situations. Thus, the
issue of concern is that since Title IX is part of our civil rights
foundation in
this country, we should all as a nation be concerned when there is movement
to revise civil rights regulations in order to make it easier to separate
people on the basis of sex. Single-sex education options that have been
developed in order to compensate for barriers that women and girls have
faced (for example in math and science) are already permissible and no
regulation change is necessary.
