The Honolulu Star Bulletin

series
last week on Title IX and athletics. Because we do not have professional
sports in Hawaii, the school teams at both the high school and college
level
seem to take on a greater importance. Our UH women's volleyball team is a
source of pride, and right up there with UH football and basketball in
terms
of fan support.
I will be interested to see what comes of the ED commission, but several
times
in the above mentioned series, various people mentioned the problems with
the
huge budgets of football and basketball being sacrosanct, and women's
sports
(Title IX) being the scapegoat. However the opportunities given to young
women due to the opening up of athletics to women was inspiring, and many
local "stars" were profiled in this series.
I'd be interested if any other city papers/magazines did similar pieces
because of the 30th anniversary of Title IX.
