Saturday Academy Job Description
Project Director
Advocates for Women in Science, Engineering and Mathematics (AWSEM)
Purpose and Job Summary:
The AWSEM Project Director works with the AWSEM Staff, AWSEM Steering
Team, and Collaborative Partners (including WITI: Women in Technology
International) to develop and market the AWSEM project. AWSEM promotes
meaningful interactions between young women and professional women in
science, engineering, mathematics, and technology (SEMT) with the goals of
encouraging young women to take SEMT courses and to envision themselves in
SEMT careers.

The Project Director assumes managerial responsibility for the AWSEM
program including staff management, strategic planning, marketing,
fundraising, budget, managing and initiating strategic partnerships,
public relations, and volunteer coordination. The Project Director reports
to the Executive Director of Saturday Academy, a department of Oregon
Graduate Institute of Science and Technology (OGI). The position is based
in Portland, Oregon, and requires some travel, evening, and weekend work.

Responsibilities
 Develop a marketable version of the AWSEM program, suitable for national
dissemination
 Ensure through marketing, planning, partnering, fundraising, and
leadership activities that the AWSEM project has sustainable, stable
funding by December 2000 (when the National Science Foundation grant is
completed)
 Initiate, negotiate, and nurture strategic partnerships and collaborative
efforts with a variety of partners in education, business, public and
private institutes, and other nonprofits
 Together with the Steering Team, develop and manage the project's
strategic plan
 Partner effectively with the directors of other Saturday Academy programs
 Facilitate meetings, training sessions, and other public events
 Develop, with appropriate specialist assistance, methods to evaluate the
success and progress of the project against baseline measures
 Produce reports, articles, grants, press releases and other written
material as needed

Qualifications
 Bring an assertive, entrepreneurial mind set and a strong commitment to
advocating for girls and women
 Demonstrate an adventurous spirit, understand the experimental model, and
possess good sense of humor
 Demonstrate track record of financially successful project management
 Demonstrate business experience in management, coaching, leadership,
negotiation, organizational development, and consensus building
 Excellent marketing, collateral development, and sales presentation
skills
 Excellent writing, public speaking, and editing skills
 Bachelor's degree in related area, masters degree preferred
 Understanding of and experience in development and fundraising
 Ability to visualize, write about, and describe the project' "big
picture" and ability to easily move from the big picture to details and
back again; demonstrated multi-tasking skills
