TITLE: Multicultural Youth Development Educator

LOCATION: University of Minnesota, St. Paul Campus, Center for 4-H Youth
Development

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT:
The work is done in the context of a dynamic organization in a constantly
changing environment. The mission of the University of Minnesota Extension
Service is to involve people in improving the quality of life and enhancing the
economy and the environment through education, applied research,
and the resources of the University of Minnesota. The University of Minnesota
Extension Service is a University of Minnesota department. The Center for 4-H
Youth Development is a unit within the department and is committed to
1) supporting quality youth development opportunities,
2) increasing community intentionality around youth development, and
3) expanding our understanding of positive youth development through research
and education.

Beginning the fall of 1999 the Center will be co-located with the
University-wide Children, Youth, and Family Consortium and the Division of
General Pediatrics and Adolescent Health in the new Gateway Center on the
Minneapolis campus. The Center for 4-H Youth Development is committed to a
vision of a Center that ensures 4-H youth development efforts thrive, evolve,
and diversify into the next century.

DESCRIPTION:
This is a full-time position, funded for three years, and reviewed for renewal
annually, with continuation depending on program needs, performance and
availability of funds. The Multicultural Youth Development Educator is
responsible for:
1. Incorporating multicultural, and diverse perspectives, broadly defined
(including class, race, ethnicity, gender, disability status, etc.).
2. Supporting staff, volunteers, and youth to better understand and
experience the value of inclusiveness and enrichment through diversity.
3. Facilitating the development of opportunities that engage diverse youth.

This person will have a good understanding of the scope of diversity and
multicultural activities both within Extension and in other youth organizations
so as to explore opportunities for improved collaboration. The person in this
position will also work with faculty and staff in developing, implementing,
evaluating, and creating energy for educational programs that meet the needs of
diverse audiences across the state.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Build relationships with and in diverse communities across the state about
Extension and 4-H Youth Development and its resources.

* Help staff, volunteers, and youth experience ways of operating effectively in
a multicultural world.

* Work with Center for 4-H Youth Development faculty and staff in developing,
implementing and evaluating educational programs, events, and activities that
attract and engage diverse audiences.

* Identify and disseminate information about available diversity and
multicultural resources to Extension faculty and staff working with and on
behalf of youth.

* Assist Center faculty, staff, field faculty, volunteers, and youth leaders in
gathering information and reporting on diversity and inclusiveness.

* Serve as a resource person for diversity and multiculturalism efforts with
and on behalf of youth both in Extension and other organizations across the
state.

* Assess youth development programming needs related to issues of
multiculturalism and diversity, broadly defined, as well as building tolerance.
Work with the staff development leader and appropriate others to develop
recommendations and implement staff development opportunities.

ORGANIZATIONAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Administrative Relations:
The person in this position will report to the Director of the Center for 4-H
Youth Development and will coordinate work with University of Minnesota
Extension Service Diversity and Inclusion Specialist.

Appointment:
This is a full-time appointment, funded for three years, with the University of
Minnesota academic professional title of Extension Educator without rank with a
bachelor's degree and with Extension academic rank with a master's degree or
above. This appointment will be reviewed for renewal annually, with continuation
depending on program needs, performance and availability of funds.

Performance Appraisal:
The performance of the person in this position will be evaluated annually by the
Center Director in consultation with appropriate others.

Travel:
Travel within the state is required to perform the assignments of this position.
The person in this position will be expected to use a personal automobile for
travel with reimbursement for mileage and subsistence.

Professional Development:
The person in this position will be responsible for maintaining professional
competence through a continuing professional improvement program of study,
research, participation in seminars, participation in professional societies,
etc., and participation in inservice and training activities provided by the
University of Minnesota Extension Service.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
A bachelor's degree is required. A master's degree or other higher professional
degree is preferred. Course work/training in education and
diversity/multiculturalism is strongly preferred.

Experience:
* Two or more years experience in youth development work is required
* Experience working with culturally and economically diverse audiences is
required.
* Experience in planning, implementing and evaluating teaching, training, or
educational programming is required.

Skills and Abilities:
* Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks with significant attention to
detail is required.
* Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and to share leadership is
required.
* Demonstrated ability to work respectfully and competently in diverse cultural,
ethnic, and racial communities is required.
* Strong oral and written communication skills are required.
* Demonstrated commitment to inclusivity/diversity is required.
* Demonstrated ability facilitating groups with diverse backgrounds and
differing perspectives is desirable.
* Demonstrated ability to bring verbal and written closure to planning tasks and
personal negotiations is desirable.

SALARY:
Commensurate with experience and education.

BENEFITS:
Federal appointment and benefits, including federal retirement, health and life
insurance. (If you previously participated in federal retirement, but are not
now participating, we must obtain approval from Extension Service USDA,
Washington, D.C. before you may resume your participation.) Eligibility for
holidays, vacation and sick leave varies based on percent time of appointment.
