Announcing The Society for Advancement of Chicano and Native Americans in
Science (SACNAS) Conference
October 7-10, 1999 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, OR.
Dr. Rita Colwell, Director of the National Science Foundation; Dr. Francis
Collins, Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute; and Dr.
George "Pinky" Nelson, former NASA astronaut and Director of Project 2061, will
present Keynote Addresses.
The K-12 Teacher Workshops provide dynamic hands-on, inquiry-based
workshops for pre-college educators who work with students from
backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in the sciences. Participants
also examine innovative techniques for designing effective yearlong
science programs in alignment with national standards. In addition,
attending the addresses and events of the concurrent 1999 SACNAS National
Conference offers many informal opportunities to meet scientists and
students who are leaders in their fields of scientific study.
Who should apply:
Educators serving K-12: classroom teachers; science and math specialists;
Title I teachers; program coordinators who work with at-risk students; and
administrators.
Application deadline: May 31, 1999
Application process:
There are 150 openings for the 1999 SACNAS K-12 Teacher Workshops. 100
educators will be awarded scholarships through SACNAS to attend. The
additional 50 spaces will be offered on an availability basis to teachers
who can provide their own funding to the conference.
