TV Shows Supporting School Anti-Violence Efforts to Air
In the wake of last week's violence at Littleton, Colorado's Columbine High
School, parents and school employees nationwide are turning to efforts such as
anti-violence programs, peer mediation training, and school lockdown practices
to help prevent future such tragedies. Two instructional television series
airing in late April and early May offer educational resources for such efforts.
Provided by the Educational Communications Board (ECB), these series will
appear on public television stations throughout Wisconsin. Additional programs
are scheduled for fall 1999.
The programming addresses the needs of students from pre-kindergarten
through grade 12 and assists educators in meeting Wisconsin Model Academic
Standards for health education. Violence Prevention: Inside Out helps
students in grades 7 through 12 learn to understand, prevent, and cope with
violent situations. All three 20-minute Violence Prevention episodes air
May 2 from 3:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. for taping by schools.
Recognizing that it is critical to start developing skills for dealing with
conflict at the elementary grades, the ECB is developing two series with
that focus. The seven 15-minute Getting Along episodes teach conflict
resolution skills to students in pre-kindergarten through grade 2. Two
episodes of the series air at 9:15 a.m. on April 30 and May 7. Working
Together, a six-part series on conflict resolution skills for young people
in grades 3 through 6, will premiere in fall 1999.
All three series will be broadcast in fall of 1999 on public television
stations throughout Wisconsin. Teacher guides for the series can be ordered
from the ECB teacher materials website (explore.ecb.org/itv). A companion web
site for the Getting Along and Working Together series can be found at
www.ecb.org/conflict/. A CD-ROM, scheduled for release in the second semester
of the 1999-2000 school year, will also accompany these programs.
