I agree - elementary teachers may not feel comfortable with science, and I
applaud what you are doing. This summer I talked with a fifth grade teacher
who said that she nevers does science because it is "messy." But, I am also
working with a group of elementary teachers who are leaders in their
schools and helping to change the attitude toward science and to provide
teachers with guidance. This goes along with the parallel discussion about
when do girls opt in. Although I thing the problem of opting out begins in
middle school, perhaps you can get girls to "opt in" strongly enough in
elementary to overcome the middle school barrier.
