    2000 SACNAS K-12 Teacher Workshops
    October 12-15, 2000
    Atlanta, Georgia

    The Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native
    Americans in Science (SACNAS) seeks to promote science
    and mathematics education in underrepresented minority
    communities. Held in conjunction with the Society's
    professional scientist annual conference, the SACNAS
    K-12 Teacher Workshops are designed to support educators
    in addressing the needs of pre-college students from
    backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in the sciences.

    Workshop participants will:
    1. Acquire skills in the variety of inquiry-based methodologies

    2. Expand background knowledge in science, mathematics
                 and engineering
    3. Gain innovative curriculum to implement in the classroom
    4. Build nationwide networks of teachers and scientists
                 dedicated to minority education

    In addition to interactive sessions lead by SACNAS,
    activities include in-depth workshops presented by
    partner organizations, keynote speaker and Nobel laureate
    addresses, off-site visit to a local informal education
    site, catered meals, exhibits and social events. Partner
    organizations to present teacher workshops include
    National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the
    GLOBE Project, the American Society for Microbiology,
    National Institutes of Health/ Office of Science Education,
    Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, EQUALS math
    program, Wonderwise: Women in Science Learning Series,
    the SMILE program and more.

    Registration: Final Deadline: September 15, 2000 (postmarked).
    Registration includes participation in all activities
    of the teacher workshops and national conference. Meals
    are included.

    Scholarships: Application Deadline: June 16, 2000 (postmarked).
    Selected educators will receive full airfare and lodging
    scholarships to attend the Workshops.
