In the discussion of acculturation issues, I'd like to see more inclusion
of the experience of our own native American kids, especially Eskimo and
reservation Indian. Suicide and violence rates are very high. Years ago
when I worked among the Eskimo people I observed first hand, what Durkheim
meant by "anomie", a kind of cultural "dizzyness-on-the-way-to-emptiness,
that grips lots of kids caught between two cultures.

Also fyi, our relate for teens software, which was recently demonstrated to
be effective in reducing aggression and improving academic performance
among middle school students in a New York City school, includes the
topics: immigrant, diversity, discrimination, embarrassment about family,
and ESL. (A note: This is the moderator speaking now, I have asked Alice
Ray to please provide the listserv audience on how to obtain this software.
She will send us the information in the next posting. Thank you)

Dear Panelist:

Could you please elaborate on the types of pressures that immigrant girls
face on assimilating vs pressure against selling out, old home culture vs.
new home culture and its impact on educational achievement.....
