[EDEQUITY]More question about stalking

I also read this information on stalking. The facts are appalling. Its
frightening and threatening. Living in fear is no way to go...to make it
more personal, my daughter will enter 9th grade and in four short years be
in college. Has there been interest in a National
discussion/program/massive
education program/additional laws set up to address this issue? It seems at
this point the movement against sexual violence is piecemeal and being
dealt
with on an individual or case-by-case basis...Are campuses dealing with
this
issue in concert??

Reseachers/practitioners who are exploring masculinity and male violence
might create a national forum, such as the national conversations on
race...Joseph Pleck, Jackson Katz, Charlene Allen, others? In fact, I just
read about Jackson Katz today. He will be speaking at Western Oregon
University in Monmouth on June 13, 2001. The topic is "Violence Against
Women & the Messages Society Sends Men & Boys." The information, from Mary
Bunn at the Oregon Department of Education states: "Jackson Katz is one of
America's leading anti-sexist males activists. He is the founder and
director of MVP Strategies, an organization that specializes in providing
gender violence prevention education and training for men and boys."

Are there any initiatives on the national agenda that anyone is aware of??
I
would like to know more. Thanks.

Subject: [EDEQUITY]Do institutions what the publicity on stalking..

I find this topic very interesting. A woman in my church whose daughter
was going to school in the New England area was being stalked by a young
man.
I encouraged her to report the incidence to authorities and the Justice
Department. She said the college/university told her that was unnecessary,
that they would handle it. I tried to convince her that the institution
just didn't want the publicity.

It is hard when your daughter is on a scholarship from the
college/university and you are of modest means. The young woman has just
received full tuition for her Masters and Doctorate programs.

To my knowledge the stalking has stopped but I wonder how many other
similar unreported cases there might be.

Safety Sexual Assault, Stalking Widespread on Campuses
By Megan Costello - WEnews correspondent

(WOMENSENEWS) -- Sexual assault and stalking of college women are
widespread and grossly underestimated by official statistics, a recent
study funded by the Department of Justice indicates.

An estimated 28 percent of college women surveyed said they had suffered
completed or attempted rape, sexual coercion, unwanted sexual contact,
or stalking during a seven-month period, according to this unprecedented
in-depth research effort.......................................
