[EDEQUITY] All girl math classes illegal?

Hello EdEquity,

My name is Debra Spear, and I am an 8th Grade Math/Algebra teacher in a
public middle school in Southern California. From 1995-2000 I taught at
least one all-girl 8th grade Algebra class. The class filled up quickly at
the beginning of each new school year. This year we have a new principal.
He did not allow the class to be offered this school year because he
believes that is illegal to have any "single sex" classes. I need
assistance in convincing him that this is a good program, and not against
the law. Can any of you help me with this? I would like to offer the
class
again for the next school year (Sept. 2001 - June 2002). This fear has
also
affected an all-girl IMPACT group that I have facilitated for the same
amount of time. Is it really against the law to offer support groups for
girls only in a public school? Twelve girls signed up for the group this
semester and we were turned down by the IMPACT coordinator because there
were no boys in the group. I don't want to do anything that is against the
law, but I am having a difficult time believing that programs that have
been
so helpful to girls in the past, are now inappropriate and not allowed.
Any
suggestions - pro and con - would be greatly appreciated.
Debbie
