My name is Edwina, I live in Portland, Oregon and I go to Jefferson High
School. I like going to Jefferson and even though a lot of people have
something bad to say about my school over all it's a good school. What I
don't like about the education provided by the Portland Public School
district are the promises made by them and the promises not kept. If
people stood behind our schools rather then putting them down, maybe
some schools wouldn't be so crowded and others wouldn't have such small
student bodies. I can achieve anything as a young woman going to a
school ranked high in the school report cards.
As a young woman I don't feel like a underachiever. I feel like I can
do anything that I wish. I don't feel like somebody is trying to hold
me back either. I have noticed that there are more places in the job
force that are wanting to employ more women and minorities. Although I
know there are people and places that discriminate against black people
and women, I have never ran across someone who has. I have a very high
attitude about being a black girl, and no one can take that away.
I don't think being a girl affected what I want to be when I grow up. I
want to be a nurse, I started out wanting to be a doctor, but that is
too many extra years of school. Maybe being a nurse for a few years will
change my mind. Another thing I want to do when I grow up is be a
carpenter. Not too many girls grow up to be carpenters, but I like to
build and mess around with wood so being a girl won't stop me.
