Accessible, Online Professional Development Opportunity
         for the Busy Educator!

ENGAGING MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS IN MATH AND SCIENCE

Are some girls in your classes tuning out of math or science?

Are you wondering why there are still so few women in math, science,
or technology careers? or how to get your students to consider these
careers?

Do you want to learn how to effectively reach disadvantaged girls,
girls who are learning English, or girls with learning disabilities?
Do you want to increase interest and achievement for all of your
students?

Are you looking for ways to talk with other educators, exchange ideas,
and learn new skills?

Do you want professional development that fits with your schedule?

Here is an exciting chance to join educators from around the country in an
online course that will explore ways to increase girls' interest and
participation in math and science. Build on what you already know about
good instructional practice, and achieve a long-term goal to develop more
equitable classrooms that support learning for both boys and girls.

Comments from participants about this highly successful online course are
consistent in praise.

"Good introduction to the issue of gender equity in the math/science
classroom. A great initial eye-opener for teachers who want to be more
equitable teachers." ? Denice Jobe, AAUW Educational Foundation

"This is a great course and taught me a lot about gender equity even though
I have been involved with it for a number of years ? very practical and
useful." ? Rosemarie Wolf, Rochester City School District

Middle school makes a difference. Starting in the middle school grades,
girls are less likely to take elective courses in math and science. This
downward spiral is especially severe for low-income or disadvantaged girls,
girls with learning disabilities, and girls who are learning English as a
new language. This exciting course brings teachers together to explore how
they can make a difference at this critical time.

Useful for both formal and informal settings, this course helps you
integrate equity into math and science classrooms and programs to benefit
all students! Building on what teachers already know about good
instructional practice, the sessions attend to the unique social and
academic needs of girls at this point in their development.

Inexpensive and fits easily into every budget and schedule. Comes with
plenty of additional materials and resources for classroom use.
Professional development points and college credit available. For nine
weeks you can access this flexible eight-session course at your
convenience.

Developed by the WEEA Equity Resource Center and the New England
Comprehensive Assistance Center, this is the perfect professional
development opportunity for individuals, or teams from a school district.
Useful as a mini-course addition to a teacher-training program. Call us or
check our website www.edc.org/WomensEquity for more information on course
schedules, on how to register for the course, or to arrange for a special
offering for your district or institution.
