Balancing the Equation reports on the gains made by women and girls in
Science, Engineering, and Technology over the past 2 decades, the key
challenges remaining, the lessons learned, and new questions that must be
addressed.

Specifically, the report includes:
*Chapters on K-12, undergraduate and graduate education, and business and
industry that point to moments in the education and career cycles when
intervention can make a difference.

*Interviews with key women leaders responsible for enlarging the scope of
science.

*Special Reports on Affirmative Action, funding, global comparisons, a
critique of the Human Genome Project, and more.

*Extensive Resource Guide that highlights best practices that can be
replicated, including the work of NCRW member centers.

*Specific recommendations for action in all arenas.

*Report conclusions: Balancing the equation for women and girls requires
strong leadership, changes in cultural values and practices, and systemic
reform of institutions.

"There is room for cautious optimism at the beginning of this new century.
It is up to all of us to put in place practices and ways of thinking that
will enable women and girls to thrive in the sciences, and the sciences to
thrive because of women's and girls' heightened participation."-Linda G.
