One of the ways we might interest girls to adapt their phenomenal skills
with finger dexterity (just look at the representation of women in
factories around the world, not to mention sewing and other dexterity
work), is to provide them with a clear set of rewards. As long as girls
never see what the rewards might be, for the good reason that their
possible role models have hit the glass ceiling, why should they take an
interest? And of course, what money might buy for a girl is not what
money might buy for a boy. So you techies, what toys and goals and
pleasures do you have that are made possible by your work? Make those
rewards visible? How about an ad campaign: "Techie Donna C. is traveling
around the world this year for the United Nations, putting Internet
technology at the service of women who would otherwise not have access
to sources and markets for their local craft cooperatives. She is
greeted everywhere as Sister Techie...and is welcome in every home."
