The following statement is based on the EDEQUITY Dialogue on Technology and
Equity, July 16-20,2001.

After seeing your website I had to check with my son to see if she was a
Bret Harte student and found that my granddaughter has been one of your
students. I am so glad. As a retired science teacher I know what it takes
to
do the kind of teaching you do. Some of us have always done all the hands
on
science we had time for (at our families expense, I'm afraid). Now the
"educators" are rediscovering the truth that we learn best by doing. Thank
you for all you do for your students.

I teach middle school math and science in Oakland. I have participated in
a couple of NSF-sponsored gender equity projects that tried to get girls
interested in science and technology. The current version is called
Techbridge, and is led by Linda Kekelis out of the Chabot Space and
Science Center. The primary model for this has been after school clubs, but
lastyear at my school I initiated an all-girl elective technology class
that
meets before the school day begins................................
