I fully support the idea's expressed in posts urging the US government to
make sure women, who do not currently have a voice, are included as part of
any new Afghanistan coalition government and to ensure the education of
women and girls in the future in Afghanistan. It seems clear to me that
even though the US will have influence in who makes up a new Afghanistan
coalition government, the US will not be the only influence. I feel the UN
and the Afghanistan area governments will have influence too. It occurs to
me that those of us who want our government to have this kind of influence
to help make sure women become true partners with men, may need to consider
our governments position, not having ratified CEDAW.

I feel it may be an effective strategy for us to consider placing our
energy, into getting broad State by State support within the US, for
getting the US Congress to ratify CEDAW. I feel we need local chapters of
groups to get municipal resolutions and when they get meaningful numbers of
such resolutions in each State, to than get State resolutions, then when we
have enough of State resolutions, to then go to Congress again. When we
get CEDAW adopted by Congress we will have much more national credibility
to convince other allies to join us to get many more (Afghanistan and
others) woman friendly governments. I wonder how we will convince a new
Afghanistan government if we haven't been able to convince our US Congress
to adopt CEDAW first?
