Final ED Appropriation for FY 1996

MONTHS OF BUDGET UNCERTAINTY ended last week as Congress
passed (by a wide bi-partisan margin) -- and the President
signed into law -- a final funding measure for the Department
of Education for the fiscal year 1996 (which ends September
30). Secretary Riley heralded the budget agreement as "an
important victory for parents, students, teachers, & every
American working to improve education & expand educational
opportunity."

Below are highlights of the agreement. Here you'll find this
year's *final appropriation levels* for 18 programs. You'll
also find, for these 18 programs: (1) last year's funding
levels (FY 95), (2) House & Senate positions before the
compromise was struck, and (3) the President's request for each
program for the coming fiscal year (1997, which begins October
1). A table showing FY 1996 funding levels for all U.S.
Department of Education programs will be available in our
Online Library within 1-2 weeks at:
