a great book for girls and everyone else

Hello everone--I belong to a book group that reads fiction for children and
young adults, and we just read a fantastic book called The Golden Compass by
an English writer named Philip Pullman. It is a fantasy-adventure-quest, with
echoes of The Snow Queen and many other magical, mythical stories, set in a
world much like our own but with some big differences. The hero is a girl of
about10 named Lyra, who is as smart, daring, and courageous a character as
you will ever find. (She also has a finely developed moral awareness.) I know
a couple of sixth grade girls who became completely enchanted by this book
and now plan to dress up on Halloween as Lyra and Pan, her "daemon." (If you
want to know what a daemon is, read the book!)

I haven't fallen into a book with such abandon in I don't know how long. Give
yourself a treat--buy it, read it, and pass it on to your favorite girl, boy,
or adult.
P.S. It's the first of a trilogy! Can't wait for the next installment.
