a potential grandmother went shopping for ther about to be born granddaughter
and was looking at a toy workbench. she asked the young girl standing next to
her if that was something she would play with. no, the girl replied, but my
briother would. no packaging on this workbench, but the girl had received
the message loud and clear.
family tools and technology directed by arlene chasek here uses tools, legos,
and hands-on activities to get girls confortable with using tools and working
their way through the design process. preminiary evaluations will soon be
available, but it was obvious from the pre-tests that girls were not expected
to use tools.
