Block scheduling

I am interested in hearing from anyone about block scheduling of classes
where half of a year's curriculum is taken in one semester and the other half
is taken in the next. What are the advantages? What are the disadvantages?

Concerns I have include:

Continuity and retention - Let's say a high school student takes a math
course first semester of her sophomore year and does not take another one
until second semester of her junior year. What is the effect?

Stress - Which is a higher stress situation for a student: concentrating on 6
or 7 courses each semester for an entire year or concentrating on 4 courses
per semester, but being required to complete a year's work within a
semester's time?

You may reply privately. I am going into a meeting on February 13 and would
love to bring some anecdotal information with me. I've seen some research,
but it looks to me like the jury is still out on this one.

Thanks for your help.
