Position Announcement

Acting Director
SummerMath Program
Mount Holyoke College
Position Dates: January through August, 1998

Pending final funding, Mount Holyoke College seeks a creative and
dedicated educator to take on the Acting Directorship of its SummerMath
program.

SummerMath, initiated in 1982, is a six-week, residential, summer
mathematics program for young women in high school. It is based on a
constructivist learning model and research in women's learning. Classes
focus on conceptual understanding through collaborative learning,
experimentation, and reflection. In addition to mathematics, students
study computer programming and work on mathematics arising in
non-mathematical contexts. They also participate in sports and hear
speakers representing different careers. The residential program is
designed to deepen students' appreciation of living and learning in a
multi-ethnic community.

The position requires a broad understanding of mathematics learning and
experience with adolescents. It also requires a deep commitment to
gender and racial equity in education. Mount Holyoke College and its
SummerMath Program are deeply committed to fostering multicultural
diversity in their faculty, staff, and students. There will be special
interest in applications from those who have a demonstrated record in
mentoring women, especially women of color. The position offers a great
opportunity to work with an experienced and dedicated staff. The Acting
Director will also receive support from an Assistant Director and a
faculty advisory committee.

The Acting Director would supervise the 1998 SummerMath program, ensuring
the academic soundness and high quality residential life of the program.
Responsibilities include: Hiring and supervising the teaching and
residential staff, leading a week of staff preparation, informing
potential students and their families about the program, selecting
students, awarding financial aid, coordinating scholarship student
selection, overseeing program operations during the summer, and preparing
for the evaluation of the program.

The anticipated Acting Director position will be approximately half-time
from January 1998 through April 1998 and full-time from May 1998 through
August 1998. Salary for this position will be $20,000 - $23,000,
depending on experience, and there will be a limited amount of travel
support.

Mount Holyoke College is an affirmative action employer. Women and
minorities are especially encouraged to apply.
