CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS - PLEASE POST WIDELY

TOXIC TOWERS:
THE IMPACT OF HIGHER EDUCATION ON WOMEN
Friday and Saturday, August 15 and 16, 1997
The University of Akron
Akron, Ohio

Is the Ivory Tower a Toxic Tower for women? In 1973, Adrienne Rich
said, "The university is above all a hierarchy. At the top is a small
cluster of highly paid and prestigious persons, chiefly men, whose
careers entail the services of a very large base of ill-paid or unpaid
persons, chiefly women: wives, research assistants, secretaries,
teaching assistants, cleaning women, waitresses in the faculty club,
lower-echelon administrators, and women students who are used in
various ways to gratify the ego. Each of these groups of women sees
itself as distinct from the others, as having different interests and
a different destiny."

Presentations, panels, and roundtables of all kinds are invited to
discuss and examine the experiences of women in all aspects of higher
education. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

mentoring
sexism, racism, heterosexism, and/or classism
disciplinary boundaries
hiring and tenure discrimination
harassment
activism and coalitions
attitudes towards mothers and/or coparents
status boundaries between students, staff, faculty, administrators,
etc.

Papers and sessions about the experiences of women as office staff,
full- and part-time faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and
administrators are equally encouraged.

If you are interested in presenting a paper (not to exceed 20
minutes), please prepare a 1-2 page abstract. If you are proposing a
panel (approximately 60-90 minutes), please prepare a 2-3 page
proposal identifying the number of speakers and potential equipment
needs. If you are suggesting a roundtable discussion, please prepare
a 1-2 page description of your topic. Send abstracts and proposals
to:
