Three items in ACADEME TODAY, the online posting from THE CHRONICLE OF
HIGHER EDUCATIOn have particular interest for equity advocates:

~* FEARFUL OF OFFENDING TAXPAYERS, the Idaho Board of Education
has voted not to support a project by an Idaho State
University professor that would have explored the origins of
gay communities in the Pacific Northwest. The board also
decided to change the make-up of an advisory group that
recommends such grants, although the board denied that the
two actions were connected.

THE SUPREME COURT AND GENDER EQUITY IN COLLEGE SPORTS

As we reported in a special bulletin Monday, the Supreme Court
has decided not to consider the Brown University case on the
obligation of colleges to provide equal opportunities to female
athletes. If you missed the story Monday, our special section on

* WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY decided last week to re-evaluate
the use of female students as "hostesses" for football
recruits after the practice aroused criticism from students
and faculty members.
