Subject: Vocational Ed. Mark-up

Things seem to be moving very quickly all of a sudden. It is anticipated that
the House vocational education bill will be introduced tomorrow, Tuesday June
10, 1997. Mark-up is scheduled for Thursday, June 12, 1997 and the full
committee mark-up is scheduled for Wednesday, June 18, 1997. This means that
we need to continue sending faxes and phone calls requesting that required
language be included in the bill that supports the continuation of the sex
equity and single parent/displaced homemaker activites.
It is very apparent from our discussions with staff on the hill that an
understanding of the sex equity programs is limited. Please ask your people
to include in their communications the importance of provisions that
eliminate sex bias and stereotyping and how professional development and
materials have been helpful in creating more effective learning environments
for all students. I am not sure the Republicans understand sex equity like
they understand the single parent issues.
Just as a reminder here are the Committee members names and fax numbers.
Since the full committee mark-up is scheduled for Wednesday, June 18,1997
please ask your folks to fax to the whole committee, or their members on the
committee. Address any correspondance to:

Thanks for your continued help and support. I know that my continuing
requests for information, letters, faxes and phone calls can get old.
Unfortunately this is only the beginning. The Senate battle will most likely
be even harder. Don't give up, I am working with the National Coalition on
Women and Girls in Education to help Democratic staff to introduce amendments
that are supportive of our work. At the same time you need to keep those
cards and letters coming. They do mean so much!! Don't hesitate to call if
you hear anything or need more information.
Mimi
