Subject: issues for preschoolers

I am part of a team developing a program to introduce concepts and strategies
for collaborative conflict resolution to preschoolers and their parents. In
designing the program, I am trying to be mindful of gender issues. I find it
is easy to fall into certain traps and I catch myself doing it: for instance,
using "he/him" more than "she/her" in referring to people in general; tending
to assign male identities to puppet characters; and so on. I do wonder about
the not-so-obvious traps that I may be falling into without knowing it.
The day care classrooms I work in are full of strong, confident little girls,
and I want to do my part to help ensure that they remain so. If there is
anyone out there who works with young children and would like to share
ideas/anecdotes/insights, I would be delighted to hear from you.
Thanks,
Kathleen Cochran
