I am new to the WEEA staff and, over the next few months, will be coordinating a
year-long celebration of the 25th anniversary of Title IX. The year was
launched officially on June 23, 1997--the actual anniversary date--with the
release of the National Coalition for Women and Girls in Education's "Report
Card on Gender Equity" (free copies are available from the National Women's Law
Center, 202/588-5180). WEEA, in conjunction with partner organizations like the
Coalition, will be producing a Title IX Activities Kit for schools and
communities to develop a local focus on Title IX and gender equity. The kits
will include: a history of Title IX (featuring anecdotes and interviews with
activists, policymakers, and others); a Title IX Digest containing a selection
of articles highlighting a particular aspect of Title IX (the theme or focus of
the Digest has not yet been determined); check lists; recommended activities;
and a celebration poster and T-shirt. We also will be producing public service
announcements and other media resources to support the
celebration. The kit and media materials will be available in September.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions related to our planned
activities, or if you are aware of any other new resources or upcoming events to
celebrate this anniversary.
Additionally, we will be re-designing the WEEA website to include a section on
Title IX. This section will contain Title IX materials from a variety of sources
and will have links to many other organizations. Look for the new and improved
website in mid-August. If you have materials to post on the website, please send
them to our web designer, Audrey Schulman at "aschulman@edc.org".
