EDEQUITY (Educational Equity Discussion List) is an
international electronic discussion forum on issues
of educational equity in a multicultural context in
schools, colleges and other education sites.

***How does it work?***
EDEQUITY is a discussion list. Subscribers send
messages to the discussion list address
<EDEQUITY@mail.edc.org>, where the list administrator
approves the messages and forwards them to the list.
The messages are distributed to all subscribers via
email, either as single messages or as a "digest"--
a compilation of the week's messages into one long
message. To respond to a specific message--continue
a discussion or thread--subscribers use the "reply"

In administrating EDEQUITY, our mission is to
facilitate subscribers' networking and sharing of
information, techniques, resources, and ideas. We
provide the forum for discussion about educational
equity. We encourage subscribers to ask questions,
respond with resources and ideas to help each other,
and discuss methods and strategies. Messages for the
list should be sent to <EDEQUITY@mail.edc.org>

*** What is educational equity? ***
Educational equity refers to an educational environment
in which individuals can consider options and make
choices based on their abilities and talents, not on the
basis of stereotypes, biased expectations, or discrimination.

*** Who participates? ***
EDEQUITY is designed to encourage discussion between
teachers and other educators, equity practitioners,
advocates, parents, counselors and others interested
in equity. The participation of both women and men is

*** What do we discuss? ***
EDEQUITY serves as a forum to discuss how to attain
equity for males and females; and how gender equity
can be a helpful construct for improving education
for all. Topics for discussion include, but are not
limited to, classroom interactions, curriculum
development, school environment, education reform,
violence prevention, math and science education,
vocational and nontraditional education, school-
to-work issues, community-based learning, and
counseling. This list gives people an opportunity
to ask questions and exchange information about
teaching strategies, useful texts and films,
innovative programs, current research, and
funding sources.

Feel free to introduce yourself to the list,
describing your work and goals.

The EDEQUITY User's Guide follows. It describes
all of the policies of EDEQUITY and lists helpful
information for subscribers.

EDEQUITY is run by "Majordomo" software on a UNIX server at
EDC in Newton, MA. Subscriptions, this welcome message,
compilation messages called digests, all are handled by
Majordomo directly. Messages concerning your subscription
(subscribing, unsubscribing, changing to digest subscription,
etc.) should be sent to MAJORDOMO@MAIL.EDC.ORG. (Do not send
subscription messages to the EDEQUITY list.) If you have
subscription problems that have not been or cannot be solved
by Majordomo, contact the list administrator at

The weekly digest is a compilation of the week's
messages into one jumbo-sized message. To receive
the weekly digest of EDEQUITY messages, send
the following in the body of your message to
MAJORDOMO@MAIL.EDC.ORG: (do not use a subject heading)

subscribe edequity-digest.

If you are already subscribed to the regular mailing
list but only want the digest, be sure to unsubscribe
by sending this message to MAJORDOMO@MAIL.EDC.ORG:

Messages for the list should be sent directly to
EDEQUITY@MAIL.EDC.ORG. An e-mail message sent to
EDEQUITY will be distributed to all subscribers of the
Internet list. They are also accessible through the WEEA
web site http://www.edc.org/CEEC/WEEA/edequity/index.html
Be sure to end with your name and e-mail address.

-Relate your message to some aspect of educational
equity as defined in the introduction above.

-Make sure to use descriptive headings so that others
will know if that topic interests them.

-When sending a message to the list, ALWAYS put your
name and e-mail address at the end of every posting so
that people can identify you and respond to you
privately if they wish.

-When requesting information from other subscribers
it is especially important to include your e-mail
address for folks to reply privately to you.
Please note that some electronic mail systems
indicate that messages are from EDEQUITY
rather than give the "return address" of the sender.
In those systems, the sender's information is lost
if not included in the body of the message.

-When replying to someone else's message, include only
a few lines of their original message (including the
whole message takes up a lot of space and discourages
others from reading your message).

-A technique to efficiently share resources: if you
have received messages responding to a query that
others may be interested in, consider compiling the
info and posting it to the list as one message.

-Remember that not everyone on EDEQUITY is an Internet
veteran and may not understand some conventions that
seem second nature to you. Please explain items in your
messages fully.

If you respond to a message received from EDEQUITY
by hitting the reply key, everyone on the mailing
list will receive your message. This is appropriate
when the contents of your message are likely to be of
interest to a number of subscribers. However, if you
are writing, for example, to request a copy of something
another subscriber has mentioned, please send your
request privately, not to the list. Similarly, comments
directed at a particular person -- approval or
disapproval -- that do not further contribute to the
discussion should be sent privately, for example,
"Bravo!", "You are absolutely wrong.", or "Thanks."

7. CONDUCT: Please be respectful and courteous at all
times. Abusive behavior and inappropriate and/or rude
language will not be tolerated.

8. STOPPING MAIL: You cannot stop receiving mail from
EDEQUITY temporarily. To stop receiving EDEQUITY messages,
unsubscribe from the list and then re-subscribe when you
want to begin receiving mail again.

9. RESOURCES: You are encouraged to list resources
(materials, organizations, references, etc.) to
EDEQUITY. Please list as much information as possible
about the resource (title, publisher, address, phone
and fax numbers, etc.) and a brief description and/or
opinion of the resource.

10. CONFERENCES: Educational and/or equity conference
announcements are welcome on EDEQUITY. However, do not
send registration forms, housing information, or
schedules. Include contact persons for such information
for those interested in finding out more.

11. JOB OPENINGS: Feel free to send information on job
openings as long as the position has some connection to
educational equity. The wish to reach more female
candidates is not an adequate reason to post
noneducational equity positions.

12. ADVERTISING: Feel free to list and discuss resources
available from your organization if recently available or
relevant to a current discussion on the list.
Advertisements for professional services--particularly
those unrelated to educational equity--are inappropriate.
If you're not sure whether to post such a message, contact
the list administrator at EDEQUITY-ADMIN@MAIL.EDC.ORG.

13. EQUITY ONLINE: The list can be accessed through our
Web site at http://www.edc.org/CEEC/WEEA/edequity/index.html
Messages can be viewed by thread, author, and date.

by a note explaining why.

want to discuss something with the administrator,
