At the September 8 meeting of the National Coalition for Women and Girls in
Education it was recommended that equity advocates contact Senator Jeffords
and Kennedy immediately to support the inclusion of gender equity
provisions in the Senate version of the Perkins Act reauthorization. It
looks as if the language of the bill may be to require states to assure
"maintenance of effort or funding" for sex equity programs (in lieu of
"set-aside" wording), as well as including provisions to continue the state
sex eqity administrator positions. The final version of the bill is still
uncertain, so advocates should stress to the Senators the importance of the
Single Parent/Displaced Homemaker/Gender Equity programs to the women in
their state and inform that that progress made for women and girls in the
last several years is in jeopardy without these programs. Call, write, or
fax the senators. Jim Jeffords, SD-428 Dirksen Senate Office Building, U. S.
