Susan, Please send me your fax # or "snail Mail" address and I'll send you
a list of gender equity organizations, as you requested. In answer to your
question about state departments of education having gender equity
specialists: Under the Carl Perkins Vocational Education Act, departments
have had mandated "sex equity administrators" and set-aside money to
promote sex equity in vocational(career and technology) ecucation programs
for the last few decades. As Congress deliberates on the Reauthorization
of this ACT for next year, the sex equity administrator positions (at this
time in the deliberations) will be eliminated, as will mandated set-aside
program funds. Also, until 1996 state departments of education had equity
staff and programs in gender, race, and national origin for the last two
decades which were funded by the U.S. Department of Education under Title
IV of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Funding for these "Title IV" programs,
which included state Title IX/Gender Equity Specialists and services to
local school districts, was eliminated by Congress in 1996, resulting in
the elimination or drastic reduction of general gender equity programs in
almost every state department of education. If you need more information,
feel free to call me at 410-767-0428.
