1. Just a year and a half ago, women in Afghanistan were educated at co-ed
schools and employed in the workforce. Today, women are beaten and shot at
for trying to exercise basic human rights. Since September 1996, when the
Taliban militia group took over the Afghan capital city of Kabul, women in
the majority of Afghanistan have been essentially under house arrest.
The Taliban:

* prohibits women from leaving their homes without a husband, father,
brother, or son, even when no surviving family members exist
* requires women who do leave their homes to be covered in a restrictive,
head-to-toe garment called a "burqa," with only a mesh opening to see and
breathe through. Many women are being run over by cars due to their
impaired vision.
* requires home owners to paint windows a non-transparent, opaque color if
women live inside
* bans girls from going to elementary school and banned women from attending
university
* bans women from working outside the home
* bans women from wearing shoes that make noise when they walk

The Taliban receives financial support from Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, and
may receive support from the American oil company Unocal, if Unocal goes
ahead with plans to build a pipeline through Afghanistan.

The women of Afghanistan DESPERATELY NEED OUR HELP. Please go to

http://www.feminist.org/afghan/intro.html to learn more about the abuse of
women in Afghanistan and to find out what you can do to help restore Afghan
women's rights.

2. Feminist Victories 1998! ( http://www.feminist.org/other/victories.html

made!
