Title IX does not allow for separated physical education classes, even when
contact activities are engaged in. The students MAY be separated for that
portion of the class in which contact takes place, but for nothing else
(instruction, observation, etc.). This is permissive, not required. So if
only boys in Jonesboro were coming out of p.e. class, the classes could have
been separated by sex in that school (not permissible under Title IX). Note
that interscholastic/intercollegiate sports are allowed to be separate and
mostly are. These programs (curricular and sport) are very different, with
different goals--or should be. Melissa Keyes, Madison, WI. <Equitymk@aol.com>
