Hello everyone:

To launch our new quarterly series of topical discussions, we have arranged for
several experts on single-sex education, who are not regular members of the
EDEQUITY list, to join us from April 20 to April 22. The panel will address
some of the issues raised during our on-going discussion of this issue,
particularly the legality of single-sex education as it relates to Title IX, and
its efficacy and desirability in improving educational outcomes. The panel will
include:

Deborah Brake, Senior Staff Attorney, National Women's Law Center;

Karen Humphrey, Coordinator, California's Single Gender Academy Pilot Program;
and

Ellen Wahl, co-author "What's Sex Got to Do With It? Simplistic Questions,
Complex Answers" in AAUW's new report "Segregated By Sex: A Critical Look at
Single-Sex Education for Girls."

Format
TO FOCUS ATTENTION ON THIS DISCUSSION, ONLY MESSAGES RELATED TO SINGLE-SEX
EDUCATION WILL BE POSTED TO EDEQUITY FROM APRIL 20 TO 22. Posting of all other
messages will resume on Thursday, April 23.

The discussion ("Dialogue on Single-Sex Education") will begin with an opening
statement from each of the panelists outlining their positions on this issue.
The statements will be posted to the list by 9:30 a.m. on Monday, April 20. You
are then encouraged to reply with your reactions, comments, and questions for
the panelists and other list members. These responses will be posted throughout
the day on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. At 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22,
the panelists will post their closing statements. You may respond to these
statements until 5 p.m. at which time the Dialogue will officially be ended. Of
course, the regular members of the list can continue to send in comments on this
subject as long as they wish to do so.

To share what we learn from this discussion, WEEA plans to compile the
panelists' opening and closing statements, a summary of the questions and
comments, and a list of resources on single-sex education in a format that we
can distribute in print.
