I apologize to edequity for my question about removing boys from the
classroom. It struck me funny, at midnight, because that was the only
legal argument I could find for allowing the boys' single-sex academies
to exist. But the desire to find things funny opened me--and allies--up
to the charge of wisecracking sexist, which I regret. In the interests of
keeping things human, though, please remember that for forty years I have
been raised in a world where women have been the butt of all manner of
jokes; and it is hard not to give in to the temptation to prove that the
appellation "humorless feminist" is wrong. And remember, too, that the
girls in school are constantly subjected to a barrage of demeaning humor.
