UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

Positions: Assistant Dean of Students (working primarily with
Asian-American/Asian students)
Assistant Dean of Students (working primarily with
Hispanic/Latino students)

Responsibilities: The Assistant Dean of Students positions report to
the Dean of Students, with regular access to and support from the Vice
President for Student Affairs as needed. These positions will have
generalist responsibilities for articulating the needs of
Asian-American/Asian or Hispanic/Latino students to offices and service
providers across Grounds, working directly with students to determine their
needs. Advocacy responsibilities also will entail collecting and analyzing
relevant data and preparing reports; developing and implementing action
plans and programs to address students' academic, social and cultural needs;
supporting cultural student programs/efforts; and facilitating interaction
among Asian-American/Asian or Hispanic/Latino students and faculty, mentors,
advisors and other community constituencies. An important component of
these positions will include serving as a resource for members of the
University community who wish to promote and foster diversity in the
institution and generally nurturing an appreciation for multiculturalism on
Grounds.
The Assistant Deans will also share generalist responsibilities including
on-call crisis management rotations; working with individual students and
parents; program development; representing the office on University
committees; serving as a contact for faculty and academic deans; and other
items as assigned by the Dean.

Skills and Qualifications/Minimum Requirements:
The University seeks individuals who have a strong commitment to student
development, excellent organizational, supervisory, and interpersonal
skills, and a demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with
a wide range of constituents, including Asian-American/Asian or
Hispanic/Latino and University students, parents, faculty, administrative
staff and the surrounding community. The successful candidates will have
experience and knowledge of student development and a demonstrated
understanding of the unique needs and special service demands of the
Asian-American/Asian or Hispanic/Latino student population, as well the
role of diversity in higher education.
A Master's Degree is required. It is anticipated that the successful
candidates will have two years of full-time professional experience, some
in minority affairs-related work. Salary is commensurate with education
and experience.

University of Virginia:
The University of Virginia is located in Charlottesville, Virginia. The
University enrolls 18,000 students, two-thirds of them Virginians and
two-thirds undergraduates. There are roughly equal numbers of women and
men, and students come from all fifty states and many foreign countries.
Asian-American/Asian students currently comprise 10.2 percent of our
student body. Hispanic/Latino students currently comprise 2.1 percent of
our student body.

Applications should include a letter of interest and current resume.
Applicants also should request three professional references to send letters
on their behalf. Application materials should be submitted by June 9, 1998.
Screening will begin June 10, 1998 and will continue until positions are
filled. Appointments will begin July 1, 1998 or as soon thereafter as
possible.
