The Office of Civil Rights does not recognize cheerleading nor drill
team as meeting their requirement for equitable sports offerings. It
would seem to me and this is what I tell districts in Washington state,
that doing so will not stand up under an Office of Civil Rights
complaint regarding equitable athletic opportunity. Current review
requires districts to compare the %age of female students in comparison
to %age of female student athletic postions available. Few districts
have yet to meet this standard. So there are two other parts to the
standard which could show good faith efforts and not meaning drill team
not cheerleading.
