Alicia, you got the genders wrong in your post.
The version you posted simply isn't true.
The fix which renders the statement true reads like this:

While we have built a memorial opposite the Wall in D.C.
to honor the American women killed in Vietnam,
more than 1000 times as many males were killed by spouses or
girlfriends during the same time period in the US.
A staggering statistic.
