U.S. FEMALE FIRST EVER TO COMPETE
IN INTERNATIONAL MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD

For the first time, a high school female has made the USA Mathematical
Olympiad (USAMO) team and will be competing at the International Mathematics
Olympiad (IMO) in Taiwan. Melanie Wood, a junior at Park Tudor High School
in
Indianapolis, not only made the team, but tied Sasha Schwartz, a fellow
teammate (Radnor High School, Radnor, PA) for the first-place spot on the
team.

Wood, along with the other seven members of the USA team, will be leaving to
prepare to compete in the IMO which takes place July 10-21 in Taipei, Taiwan.
The team will compete against 84 other countries during a rigorous two-day
competition composed of problems that would challenge most professional
mathematicians.

The USA Mathematical Olympiad team was chosen from a pool of 400,000 U.S.
high
school students. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is one of
the
sponsors of the American Mathematics Competitions which administers the
U.S.A.
Mathematical Olympiad.
