At the National Coalition for Sex Equity in Education's recent conference
in Kansas City, I attended a roundtable discussion facilitated by Merle
Froschl and Barbara Sprung about their new publication, QUIT IT! A
TEACHER'S GUIDE ON TEASING AND BULLYING FOR USE WITH STUDENTS IN GRADES
K-3. Another quality product from Educational Equity Concepts, Inc., QUIT
IT! provides a valuable resource for early childhood educators.
QUIT IT! Integrates the topics of teasing and bullying into the daily life
of the classroom through three sequential themes. Each theme contains
background information, lessons, activities, reading suggestions, and ways
to connect with families.
1. Creating Our Rules: Students discuss and define the meaning of a rule
before they write their own classroom rules.
2. Talking About Teasing and Bullying: Students explore what makes them
feel welcome and unwelcome, safe and unsafe. They practice responding to
teasing and bullying in safe and realistic ways.
3. Exploring Courage: Students define courage as it relates to teasing and
bullying. They learn ways to "do the right thing" and explore how courage
and friendship interconnect.
This 128-page guide also includes sections on cooperative, non-competitive
physical games and exercises, problem solving techniques and an extensive
annotated bibliography. The activities promote skill building in language
arts, math and social studies and physical education. QUIT IT! Takes a
pro-action gender sensitive approach to reducing teasing and bullying
behavior. It encourages teachers to be aware of sex-role stereotyping and
helps develop respectful behavior between girls and boys.
